SHINee - For 1000 Years, Always Be By My Side... M/V

Original Facebook post on December 28, 2012 at 5:20pm:

SHINee are the best dancers in k-pop. There's no dancing in this music video. I don't mind in the slightest, because it's still a great MV. The title means "For 1000 Years, Always Be By My Side...". Interesting, yet easily understood storyline and visuals. Loving Onew's top hat, too. LOL ^^

U-KISS - Alone (Teaser)

Original Facebook post on December 26, 2012 at 5:17am via YouTube:

I don't usually share teasers but ... holy crap, this looks awesome. The music snippet starts a minute in, but the first minute is worth watching. Definitely has more of a Japanese feel to it, but I think it's gonna rank up there with Neverland and Tick Tack. The part that sucks? The release date isn't until 2/13. The part that's kind of amazing? This is their 6th Japanese single since Nov '11. Plus a Japanese album and 3 Korean mini-albums. O_O

U-KISS - Distance M/V

Original Facebook post on December 26, 2012:

U-KISS's 5th Japanese single, released 12/12. I like the song, except for the slow rapping parts. (Why put rapping in a ballad? Really? Make Eli and Dongho sing. They've done it before. :P) The lyrics are actually quite sweet. I really don't like the PV though. Random blurriness, no story line, everyone's just sitting around, Soohyun's eye makeup is way too heavy, wall of stalker photos, and AVEX only ever uploads short versions of the Japanese PVs. I guess it's harder to do music videos for ballads, though.

SeoTaiji - Take One M/V

Original Facebook post on December 24, 2012 at 12:40am:

From Seo Taiji's first solo album. The 3D animation is kinda crap, but given that the video is from 1998, I think that's to be expected. The song totally makes up for it, though. Music starts at 2:18ish.

SeoTaiji - T'ik T'ak

Original Facebook post on December 2, 2012 at 4:27am:

Figured I needed to learn more about Seo Taiji. This is from his most recent album in 2009. This seems like it'd be awesome live. Music starts at about 0:25.

Becca - I'm Alive (Black Butler OST) M/V

Original Facebook post on November 28, 2012 at 10:32pm:

Wish more people knew about this song. It definitely not new (I may have even shared it before...), but it's one of those songs I listen to when I need a kick in the pants to get moving. It was the ending theme for the anime Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler), but it's in English.

JYJ - Get Out M/V

Original Facebook post on November 28, 2012 at 11:19am:

Don't think I've shared any JYJ, although I've shared Junsu's solo stuff. Jaejoong (the first to sing) is a fantastic actor. I'm watching a hilarious drama he's in right now called Protect the Boss. I don't know Yoochun as well (the first one you see in the car). This isn't my favorite song, but the In Heaven MV doesn't show all three of them since it's more story based. And Ayyy Girl ... well, let's just not talk about that one.

Yang Yoseop - Caffeine

Original Facebook post on November 28, 2012 at 2:21am:

This song took a couple of listens to grow on me, but the music video is really interesting. (I would like to burn that bead suit, though.) Yoseob is the main vocalist for the group Beast. The song likens the memories of a man's lost love to caffeine, which keeps him awake. It was written by fellow group member Junhyung, who briefly appears in the MV.

TVXQ - Humanoids M/V

Original Facebook post on November 28, 2012 at 2:00am:

I wake up in the middle of the night, so what do I do? Share k-pop of course! In spite of the bad CGI, sometimes awkward dance, and almost-but-not-really plot, I rather like TVXQ's recent release. One thing that bugs me, though: it sounds like they're saying "humanoise" instead of "humanoids". Most of the time I don't really care, but it's the title of the song and repeated over and over >< Enunciate, guys.

Kim Sung Kyu - 60 sec. M/V

Original Facebook post on November 18, 2012 at 10:33pm:

This is the first solo album and MV for Sunggyu, the leader of the group Infinite. I'm very impressed. Love the song and the video. Another member of Infinite plays the guy in the MV.

Park Jung Min - Beautiful M/V

Original Facebook post on November 18, 2012 at 3:01pm:

His dance moves during the black & white tv part are just hilarious. That's all I'm gonna say.

Dal☆Shabet - Have, Don't Have M/V

Original Facebook post on November 16, 2012 at 10:33pm:

Dal☆Shabet's very fun, very disco-inspired "Have, Don't Have" comes with two different music videos. This is the "Don't Have" version, which looks like it's filmed at a grocery store warehouse. There are some pretty hilarious moments. ^^ Watch out for some very ... interesting outfits at the end. The "Have" version is here.

LED Apple - Let the Wind Blow M/V

Original Facebook post on November 15, 2012 at 10:51pm:

Hm. Let's try sentence fragments~ Interesting band with 2 lead singers who also do basic dances. 4th single this year. Been kinda following them since Time is Up in Feb. Weird MV, but kinda cool. Definitely a unique sound in k-pop atm. Awkward choreo, but not nearly as awkward as Run to You. -_- Overall, good but not quite awesome.

B1A4 - Tried to Walk M/V

Original Facebook post on November 15, 2012 at 6:42am:

B1A4 is back with a more serious song. It's pretty good, but I kinda miss their old cheesy image, honestly. It seems like the 2011 groups are starting to try to put aside the cutesy concept. At least for now.

Ailee - I Will Show You M/V

Original Facebook post on November 11, 2012 at 8:43am:

Ailee has an amazing voice. This song starts out slow, then really kicks into gear about a minute in. The music video is okay, but I think she's absolutely fabulous live. No lipsync here, although they did edit two performances together. Fun fact: Ailee is actually from New Jersey.

Update: The live performance was removed from YouTube, so here's the MV instead.

Boyfriend - Janus M/V

Original Facebook post on November 7, 2012 at 11:00pm:

This is a fantastic image and sound change for the normally cutesie group Boyfriend. Love the video, love the song. Now if only they'd change their name >< lol

CN Blue - Robot M/V

Original Facebook post on November 29, 2012 at 12:36am:

Note: Sorry, this is the only full-length version I could find.

B.A.P - Stop It M/V

Original Facebook post on October 23, 2012 at 6:12pm:

BAP is back for the *3rd time* this year with a pretty fun song and unique MV, which focuses a lot more on the vocal talent of the group. Definitely a different feel from Warrior and Power, that's for sure! Don't get me wrong, I think BYG and Zelo's rapping is pretty dang awesome, but it's about time they let the other four shine. A lot of BAP fans are upset at the different feel, but I think it's good that they can show some variety in their musical styles. It's also kinda fun that they're all blonde again. LOL

AOA - Get Out M/V

Original Facebook post on October 22, 2012 at 12:41am:

Like the song, but I'm sharing because the MV is rather interesting. In it, each of the 8 members portrays a character in an English-language movie/story. (Leeloo was a real surprise.) I like it, aside from all the butt-wiggling.

Also, this group has a very interesting concept. They're have a five member band unit and a seven member dance unit, with the drummer being the only one not in the dance unit. So yes, they are actually playing the instruments.

Block B - Nillili Mambo M/V

Original Facebook post on October 21, 2012 at 11:52pm:

Took me a bit to get into the song, but I like it a lot now. The MV is pretty weird and dang funny. (You have to watch until the end.) ^^ Look up their previous single Nalina if you like this at all.

Epik High - Don't Hate Me M/V

Original Facebook post on October 21, 2012 at 11:43pm:

Catchy song and very funny music video. The sound reminds me of Green Day in a way. Nice to see another group coming back after mandatory military service.

J-Min - Stand Up M/V

Original Facebook post on October 3, 2012 at 11:33pm:

I really like the song when it's on its own. It's the main theme song for the k-drama To The Beautiful You, a terrible re-make of Hana Kimi. Snippets of the song are played almost constantly throughout the episodes. I managed to make it through 10 of the 16 episodes before I couldn't stand it anymore, so I've heard this song a *ton* of times. Really irritating in snippets at "dramatic" moments, but quite good on its own.

KARA - Pandora (Audio only)

Original Facebook post on October 3, 2012 at 1:09am:

I really like this song, but the MV is a bit too risque for my tastes. I found this (unauthorized) YouTube video which just has the audio.

TVXQ - Catch Me M/V

Original Facebook post on September 24, 2012 at 5:27am:

Mixed feelings on this one on many levels. The song, choreo, special effects - it's all very inconsistent. Mostly, just 'meh', but there are some pretty cool moments. Enough to not simply dismiss it. As for the rest... well, let's just say it in math: TVXQ - 3 ≠ TVXQ. My suggestion? Watch this, but then go watch Mirotic... on repeat.

Seatbelts - Cowboy Bebop Piano Solo

Original Facebook post on September 21, 2012 at 4:52pm:

Just ... awesome. Yoko Kanno is a musical genius. I highly recommend this if you enjoy piano, blues, Cowboy Bebop, or great music in general. The video quality is crap at 240p, but the audio is surprisingly good.

World Order - Permanent Revolution

Original Facebook post on September 21, 2012 at 12:18pm:

So many reasons to love this video. Song is good, choreo is simply mind-blowing (esp at the 3:20 mark), and the message is great.

Side note: When Genki Sudo was an MMA fighter, he would hold up a banner after each victory which said "We are all one" with flags of many different countries.

Super Star K4 - Gangnam Style Cover

Original Facebook post on September 21, 2012 at 11:57am:

Like Gangnam Style? Check this out ... These kids do a fabulous acoustic version for SuperStarK4. Their voices are absolutely amazing. No, no they don't do the dance. They have a bit of a rocky start, but in the end, Psy definitely approves. ^^

U-KISS - Stop Girl M/V

Original Facebook post on September 19, 2012 at 10:25pm:

New U-KISS!! ^_^ Love it. (And not just because they're my favorite group.) Absolutely love that Kiseop finally has more lines. The only thing I'd change is Dongho's hair... -_- Can't wait to see the live performance in about 6 hours!

G-Dragon - Crayon M/V

Original Facebook post on September 16, 2012 at 12:28pm:

Didn't want to like this, 'cause he irritated me with One of a Kind, but after the first "Why so serious?" I just couldn't help it. The MV is definitely full of weird and crazy. The song's growing on me, but I can tell it's not going to be a favorite.

Crayon is supposed to be short for 'crazy on'. So 'get your crayon' is 'get your crazy on'. Of course, I wouldn't know this unless I had seen an interview.

FT Island - I Wish M/V

Original Facebook post on September 14, 2012 at 8:48pm:

Spanish guitar and trumpet in a k-pop song? Yes. And totally awesome. I'm don't usually like FT Island, so the fact that I was hooked on this song on the first listen was a surprise. The video is unremarkable, but not terrible.

Orange Caramel - Lipstick M/V

Original Facebook post on September 11, 2012 at 11:55pm:

Pretty dang funny. Ah, the epic sport of table tennis. The song reminds me of We No Speak Americano. I haven't decided if I really like it all that much yet, though.

Trigun OST - Lost Planet

Original Facebook post on September 9, 2012 at 9:06pm:

If I still played clarinet well, I would love to scare up a woodwind quartet and play this. It's very beautiful.

Cowboy Beebop - Tank

Original Facebook post on September 9, 2012 at 6:55pm:

Even though there are parts of the series I don't like and it's a bit depressing, it's still high on my list of favorites. The soundtrack is absolutely incredible.

EXO-K - Machine (Fanmade M/V)

Original Facebook post on September 6, 2012 at 1:20am:

Now my brain is switching between "Oppa, Oppa", the piano piece I shared yesterday, and this song. There's no MV, so a fan created one from some of the *23* teasers that SMEnt released before the group debuted. I don't particularly like the first few seconds of the song, but the chorus is what sticks in your head... like peanut butter on the roof of your mouth with no milk in sight.

Acid Black Cherry - Black Cherry (Live)

Original Facebook post on September 1, 2012 at 2:03am:

My favorite Acid Black Cherry song so far. (It starts at about 0:35.) Love how it starts out slow with a definite black-and-white movie feel, then they really kick it into gear. Absolutely love it. Only problem is that they lyrics aren't exactly ... appropriate. Fortunately I don't know enough Japanese yet where I have to think about it. (Ha!) So I'll just enjoy yasu's awesome vocals, the amazing guitar solo, and kick-ass brass and pretend I never looked up the translation. >_<

Eunhyuk & Donghae - Oppa Oppa

Original Facebook post on August 31, 2012 at 1:55am:

Not new, but this song has been stuck in my head for a while. It's really fun. Pretty dang amusing, too. Even better if you recognize the other two members of Super Junior who make an appearance. >_<

Acid Black Cherry - Shangrila

Original Facebook post on August 26, 2012 at 6:46am:

There's something about yasu's voice that really hooked me the first time I heard it. This is definitely the brightest ABC song I've heard (and seen) so far. Love the guitar parts and the drummer's expressions make me giggle.

G-Dragon - One of a Kind M/V

Original Facebook post on August 24, 2012 at 12:57pm:

Lunch break MV share! There are a lot of reasons to watch the MV: tiger and bear cubs, cabbage patch hair, cute kids, tennis as a means of destruction, barbie fights back... oh man, I had a good laugh. I don't like the song, though. It's basically just self-praise. (Lyrics translation) It doesn't take much creativity to talk about awesome you think you are. Disappointed.

U-KISS - One of You M/V

Original Facebook post on August 16, 2012 at 11:14pm:

U-KISS's newest Japanese song. Slightly more excited about this one. More upbeat than usual. Parts of the choreo are a bit awkward, but I definitely love the color-changing lightboxes. The single won't be out until 9/5 (torture!), but they filmed the PV early since AJ had to leave to go to Columbia Univ. The next video (I'm assuming Korean) will be sans-AJ.

Junsu - Uncommitted M/V

Original Facebook post on August 16, 2012 at 10:29pm:

I'm sharing a song that is in English. The whole thing. Try not to die of shock. Junsu's accent could still use some work, but overall I think he did a fantastic job. I don't like it as much as the Tarentallegra MV, but this has more of a ballad feel, so that approach wouldn't work.

Narsha - Bbi-ri-bba-bba M/V

Original Facebook post on August 15, 2012 at 3:59pm:

This amazing song has been stuck in my head all afternoon, and I'm not complaining. It's a bit old and the MV is a bit creepy, but still crazy awesome. Bbi-ri-bba-bba by Narsha from Brown Eyed Girls.

Super Junior - SPY M/V

Original Facebook post on August 12, 2012 at 10:23pm:

There's been a severe shortage of good k-pop MVs lately, so Spy seems pretty good in comparison. It's a rather disjointed song, but I'm afraid it's growing on me. A lot of it sounds exactly like the Get Smart theme. I really like the part at 1:50 for some reason.

SHE - Hana Kimi Theme M/V

Original Facebook post on August 1, 2012 at 1:02am:

Thought I'd shock everyone and share some C-Pop. This is the opening song for the 2006 Taiwanese drama adaptation of the manga Hana Kimi. It's rather cute in a notgonnamakeyoubarf kind of way. Ella, the E in S.H.E plays the lead in the drama.

Note: I'm not sure what the name of this song is in English, I'm sorry.

BoA - Only One (Dance Ver.)

Original Facebook post on July 31, 2012 at 11:35pm:

BoA is the most popular female soloist in k-pop. In particular, her songs Hurricane Venus and Eat You Up are made of awesome. She's got a great voice and I'd say she's the best female dancer as well. There's a drama version of this MV, but I found it a bit dull, tbh. The dance routine is really interesting and creative.

News: U-KISS - AJ's Announcement

Original Facebook post on July 29, 2012 at 12:35pm:

Allkpop: AJ to pursue his education at Columbia University and halt his activities in U-KISS for the time being

After a sell-out tour across Japan, AJ's taking off to go to Columbia University. I think it's unfortunate that he's going to miss the concert at the Budokan, but it's admirable that he's not abandoning his education for a few hundred thousand fans. (HA!) But ... It'll be weird seeing U-KISS without him. Maybe they'll finally take a break for a while. (I'm posting this on my wall because they happen to be my favorite group. Apologies to those who don't care. :P)

Variety Show Madness

Original Facebook post on July 28, 2012 at 2:27pm:

Another reason why I like k-pop so much. They regularly appear on variety shows and do anything to be entertaining. These clips are of two members from Super Junior, an incredibly popular group. I can't see any A-list American pop stars doing anything like this, and these are pretty tame examples.

DMZ Concert?

Original Facebook post on July 26, 2012 at 8:37pm:

Well this definitely surprised me:
SHINee, B2ST, T-ara, f(x), Ailee, and more to perform at Korea’s demilitarized zone
K-pop groups do a lot of "friendship" concerts with other countries (China, Japan, etc), but North Korea? It's not like they're going to cross the DMZ, but I'd still be nervous. Although, if anything happened to SHINee, I'm pretty sure the North Korean regime would be immediately toppled by rabid fangirls.

Update: This concert never happened. Honestly, I think it's a shame.

U-KISS - Believe (Japanese) Live Ver.

Original Facebook post on July 26, 2012 at 3:15pm:

This really shows their talent. These guys can sing and they're obviously getting more and more comfortable with Japanese. Audio only of live performance from Zepp tour.

BEAST - Beautiful Night M/V

Original Facebook post on July 21, 2012 at 8:31pm:

Brand spankin' new BEAST MV - Beautiful Night. I like the song a lot. I think they should ditch the rainbow hair and it's sorely missing awesome choreography that would normally be present...

But what I'd like to point out is the SPURS jersey. O_O Something from San Antonio in a K-Pop video?! I'm in shock. Silly, I know, but it's a bit of a sore point for American k-pop fans who don't live in CA or NY that we're kind of ignored.

Younha - Run M/V

Original Facebook post on July 21, 2012 at 3:48pm:

Great song and not your usual k-pop video. It's one of those songs that would require a driving scene in a red convertible, if it were an American pop video.

Psy - Gangnam Style M/V

Original Facebook post on July 15, 2012 at 11:03am:

I was going to wait for translated lyrics to share this, but it's just way too funny/awesome to keep to myself. Don't try drinking anything while watching. Psy is kind of half singer, half comedian. Well, probably more than half comedian. Useful info for getting the jokes: Gangnam is a very affluent part of Seoul. Psy parodies a bunch of random k-pop stuff too. So, yeah... this actually reminds me of Weird Al. >_< I'm too tired to explain any more.

Kim Hyung Jun - Sorry I'm Sorry M/V

Original Facebook post on July 12, 2012 at 3:59pm:

Catchy song with a nice beat. Apparently it's quite popular in Korea right now. The video has some neat effects and I always find it amusing when they dance in puddles. There will also be a dance-only version and a 15-minute mini-drama version. Kim Hyung Jun is a member of SS501, which is currently inactive due to management issues and military service. Random trivia: Kim Hyung Jun is the older brother of Kim Kibum, a former member of U-KISS (my favorite group). The brothers wrote some songs together for SS501.
Update: Never saw a dance-only or drama version.

NU'EST - Action M/V

Original Facebook post on July 10, 2012 at 7:27pm:

Just out ... new song by NU'EST. I really liked Face, so I was expecting the usual second-single lull. Not at all. Absolutely loved this song on the first listen. ^^ The dance break is somewhat out of place and the song is too short, but I've had the chorus stuck in my head since I saw the teaser a couple of days ago. For the most part, I'm really impressed by the rookies this year. It'd be nice if they'd tone down Ren's girlishness, though. >< (Sorry for the flood of k-pop today...)

JJ Project - Bounce M/V

Original Facebook post on July 10, 2012 at 6:48pm:

Another song I'm addicted to right now. It's really fun and energetic. Not too fond of the MV, but it doesn't make me cringe. Not bad for rookies. Turn on the captions to see the translated lyrics.

Boyfriend - Love Style M/V (+ Dance Practice)

Original Facebook post on July 10, 2012 at 5:59pm:

I've debated about sharing this MV for a while. I can't stand the cutesie concept that Boyfriend sticks to, but I can't help but love this song. (Agh! The inner conflict!) I wish they would drop the fake cuteness, trash their facepalm-inducing wardrobe, and change their name.
My recommendation is to play it, but hide the window for the first view and just listen to the song. Then actually watch the video if you're still interested. One unique thing about this group: a set of identical twins.

UPDATE: Dance practice version!

Wonder Girls - Like Money M/V

Original Facebook post on July 9, 2012 at 5:55pm:

The first k-pop song I ever listened to was Tell Me by the Wonder Girls. They're trying to break into the American market now. JYP spent some serious cash on this video (and makes a cameo at 2:30). The first 55 seconds is just a weird introduction, so feel free to skip it if you actually watch this. I wish there was more WG and less Akon, but I like the song anyway.

Super Junior - Sexy, Free & Single M/V

Original Facebook post on July 2, 2012 at 11:20pm:

Just out: Super Junior's latest MV. The song's pretty good, but it's no A-Cha or Sorry Sorry. There's a line which sounds like "Sexy, free & single, I'm ready to bingo". LOL ^^ Pretty typical SuJu video, except more shirtlessness. O_O They dance on oddly lit sets, have lots of closeups, and the inevitable slow-motion bit. Eunhyuk has a pretty cool solo dance part, though. They're down 2 members for this video; Heechul's in the military for his 2 years and Kibum's busy with acting.

Found out that the lyrics are actually-
"Sexy, free & single
I'm ready too Bingo"
No punctuation. Regardless, that 'bingo' just doesn't make sense.

Jo Kwon - Animal (Live & Dance Practice)

Original Facebook post on July 2, 2012 at 2:40am:

Jo Kwon, the leader of the ballad group 2AM, recently released his first solo album. It is amazing. The two songs he sings for this performance are pretty night and day as far as presentation goes. I really like the super-fun I'm Da One, but I'm seriously impressed with Animal. He pulled off a fantastic performance in 20cm high shoes!

UPDATED: I originally posted his comeback on SBS, but I like this performance better.

B1A4 - Baby Good Night M/V

Original Facebook post on June 27, 2012 at 8:04pm:

I hate k-pop groups that go for the cutesie angle. Except for B1A4. They try so hard that it's funny. A bit like a movie that's so bad it's good. There's silly English, overacting, cheesy dances, funny outfits (poor kid in the poncho...), and somehow the chorus always gets stuck in my head. Watch this one for a few giggles.

DJ Masa - The Good-bye Party (2011.2 K-pop Mashup)

Original Facebook post on June 22, 2012 at 1:04am:

This works amazingly well, especially since it includes 40 songs. I've shared videos of probably half of these artists. Very much looking forward to the mashup for the first half of 2012.

f(x) - Electric Shock M/V

Original Facebook post on June 16, 2012 at 3:22am:

f(x) is high on my list of girl groups, partially because they refrain from the super-cutesie stuff. (See A-Pink, TTS, Hello Venus.)The song is quite catchy, not obviously autotuned, and the chorus is basically "electric shock na na na". Easy to sing along. ^^ The dance looks like it would be fun to learn. (Jump, jump, shake booty.) There are some weird moments and the blue circle contact lenses kinda freak me out. Overall, me gusta.

Ailee - Heaven M/V

Original Facebook post on June 13, 2012 at 9:13pm:

One MV share before I say goodnight. I love this song. It gets stuck in my head from time to time and I can't help but sing along with it in my car in my funky pseudo-Korean. (As long as I get the vowels right, I consider it a success.) The harmonies are really cool and she has a very pretty voice. But you definitely shouldn't watch this in a dark room with the brightness turned up on your monitor, unless you feel like being blinded. And now ... Goodnight!

Juniel - My First June M/V (Feat. Yonghwa of CNBlue)

Original Facebook post on June 12, 2012 at 10:41pm:

Totally loving this. My First June is a very sweet, feel good song. Juniel and Yonghwa's voices sound really good together (and they sound just as good live). The video's a bit cheesy, but I'll let it slide. ^^

U-KISS - Believe M/V

Original Facebook post on June 8, 2012 at 5:09am:
I'll try to keep this short. (Which is *really* difficult for me on this one...)

The Good: The music. Written by AJ (the first member in the video). Nice tempo, chorus gets stuck in my head.
The Bad: The video. A few awkward moments, lighting funkiness, terrible green pants, Dongho's weird necklace.
The Ugly: AJ accidentally smacks Kevin in the face at about 2:20 and it looks like it really hurt.

EDIT: Enough people noticed the accident that NH Media actually released a re-edited version of the video. Never heard of that happening before.

Wonder Girls - Like This M/V

Original Facebook post on June 2, 2012 at 5:34pm:

On a completely different 'note' (get it? *snort*), first new Wonder Girls MV in a while and me likey! It's upbeat, catchy, has an fun dance, and is filmed in a flash-mob style. I wonder if they did it as a real flash mob. That would be awesome. Oh, and turn on the closed captions if you'd like to see the lyrics in English. JYP Entertainment puts subtitles in all of their videos.

Oh! Found a making-of teaser. Cool to watch, despite the unnecessarily epic background music and incorrect English.

BIGBANG - Monster M/V

Original Facebook post on June 2, 2012 at 5:09pm:

New BigBang MV! Liked the song right away. I'm sort of torn on the visuals, though. The music video has some ... interesting hairstyle choices. Daesung also gets the weirdest nose piercings I've ever seen. At one point, GD looks like Number 2 from Kids Next Door. And yet there's GD's other hairstyle and I love that they're keeping Daesung blonde. I like most of the costumes. TOP is perfect, of course. ^^ There are some impressive effects. The end of the video reminded me of the end of Portal, which was a bit weird. Anyway, sorry to ramble.

Sunny Hill - Is the White Horse Coming? M/V

Original Facebook post on May 25, 2012 at 10:16am:

Okay, I lied. There is one girl group that I liked their video. (Well technically they're co-ed, but the single male member is currently doing his mandatory military service.) Sunny Hill is not mainstream and will probably never win a music program, but they're still awesome.

I had to find an unofficial version with English subtitles, because the video makes absolutely no sense unless you know what they're saying, and even then it's a bit weird. In short, it's a commentary on the social ideals in Korean society. For experienced k-pop fans, you can see hints of dance moves from other groups' hit songs (T-Ara's Lovey-Dovey, for example).

Infinite - The Chaser M/V

Original Facebook post on May 25, 2012 at 9:53am:

Infinite's back from Japan with a pretty good song. They're definitely still the best dance group, maybe tied with SHINee. The regular version of the MV features the longest car roll in existence (think Inception). The plot, if there is one, is rather fuzzy. I prefer the dance version, which I'll post in a comment.

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't shared many girl groups' MVs for quite a while. Simply put, most of them are way too cutesy for me to stomach (especially TTS from Girl's Generation and A-Pink) and when they wink at the camera I have the sudden urge to vomit. I am desperately awaiting the return of 2NE1 in mid-June. Brown-Eyed Girls would work too.

Dance Only Version - Just wish they wouldn't do so many close-ups. I'd like to see the full dance.

Original Facebook post on May 18, 2012 at 6:25pm:

"Even if it's hard right now, you will be smiling some day..."

World Order - Aquarius M/V

Not K-Pop, but still awesome and worth watching...

Original Facebook post on May 16, 2012 at 6:24pm:

New Genki Sudo PV!! Not as jaw-dropping as the last video he released, but there's still a move in there that I just can't figure out. Love it. ^_^

Junsu (XIA) - Tarantallegra M/V

Original Facebook post on May 14, 2012 at 11:34pm:

This will not be most people's cup of tea. I'll say that outright. I'm pretty sure all the Korean tv stations have banned the video already. Definitely not unexpected of Junsu's first solo album, though. His Japanese single, Intoxication, never had a chance of seeing the light of day in Korea, although both are tame compared to, say, Lady Gaga.

Junsu is one of the members of JYJ, formerly of TVXQ. (Look up the song Mirotic if you are so inclined. I already shared it here.) The song is stuck in my head like it came with crazy glue and the dancing is ... well, jaw-dropping. Rachel Scoggins - I think you'll like this one. Let me know if I'm right, k?

Ulala Session - Beautiful Night M/V

Original Facebook post on May 12, 2012 at 4:44am:

Fun stuff!! These guys won Super Star K3, one of those talent competition reality shows. The video starts out like a ballad, but don't worry, it's not gonna stay that way. It sounds a *lot* like Footloose, but not totally. To clarify one point: They're playing keep-away with the purse to try to keep the girl from going home. Anyway, it got me grinning!

CN Blue - In Your Head M/V (Japanese)

Original Facebook post on May 7, 2012 at 6:49pm:

In celebration of the arrival (finally!!) of my copy of CN Blue's latest album, here's the PV for the Japanese version of my favorite CN Blue song. The only way to get this song legally in the US is to buy the physical album. *sigh* Just to make sure, I went ahead and got the special edition. Ah, the sacrifices I make to support these poor struggling musicians.><

Busker Busker - Cherry Blossom Ending M/V

Original Facebook post on May 3, 2012 at 1:45am:

Busker Busker is a Korean indie band that finally made it big, beating out groups with massive fan bases like SHINee. Cherry Blossom Ending is very much a feel-good song and video. And it has the best ending of any MV I've seen this year. Oh yeah ... and bunnies! (='.'=)

EXO - MAMA (Split Headset & Screen Version)

Original Facebook post on May 1, 2012 at 9:46pm:

Grab a pair of headphones (or put your speakers on either side of your head) and get ready to scramble your brains. This video of the Korean version is on the left and the Korean audio is in the left speaker channel. The Chinese (Mandarin) version is on the right. The videos are different, with different effects and locations, although they include some common scenes with all 12 members or a mixture of the two sub-groups. I actually prefer the Chinese version. I really wish SM Entertainment would hire a native English speaker to check their lyrics, though. =\

B.A.P - Power M/V

Original Facebook post at May 1, 2012 at 9:36pm:

B.A.P is back. (Although they were only really "gone" for about two weeks...) I shall dub them super-rookies because they never had a whiff of rookie about them. Power is pretty catchy, but I can't say I like it as much as Warrior. The MV is pretty spiffy. The only thing I really don't get is the spray can part. O_o Overall, I say that this is a pretty good follow-up.

U-KISS - DoraDora M/V

Original Facebook post on April 26, 2012 at 6:16am:

U-KISS's Korean comeback. I actually didn't really like this song at first, but that's because the teaser video made me expect something different. After a few listens, I totally love it. I quite like the MV as well. I always liked the walking on the wall effect. No incredibly hard dance moves for this one, but it looks like they're taking some lessons from Rain. >_< I hope they release a dance-only version. And before anyone makes a Dora the Explorer joke, "doradora" basically means crazy, crazy or going crazy.

Taemin - At Least Once

Original Facebook post on April 24, 2012 at 11:47pm:

Immortal Song is a Korean TV show where current pop singers revive old songs and compete against each other with the original performer as the judge. Great concept, imo. Taemin is a member of SHINee, a very popular boy group. He's particularly famous for his dancing, but I had no idea the kid could sing so well. Seriously. Goosebumps.

Infinite - Be Mine M/V (Japanese Ver.)

Original Facebook post on April 24, 2012 at 12:39am

Yet another k-pop group is expanding to Japan. Most K-Pop groups just refit their popular songs with Japanese lyrics, and maybe add in an original song or two. The replacement lyrics don't always sound quite right, but I think it actually works quite well with Be Mine. ^^ The camera work makes it look like they were filming during an earthquake, though.

More Than Words Cover - Featuring Kevin, Taemin, Junsu, and Hyunseung

Original Facebook post on April 14, 2012 at 9:15pm:

Always loved this song. I really like this version, even with their accents and the screaming French girls. This is a collaboration between members of 4 popular k-pop groups, which is very unusual since they are all from different companies. I like all of their voices, but I think Kevin (on the far right) is the best. He's also the only one without an accent - he's originally from California.

EXO-K - MAMA M/V

Original Facebook Post on April 7, 2012 at 7:52pm:

O_o I have SO much I could say about this. Definitely the strangest K-Pop video I've ever seen. There's this introduction (in English) about the group's fairy-tale type origins. Weird. And then the actual music starts at about 1:25 with the members in monk's robes. The whole thing mixes the pop sound with gregorian chant-ish stuff. I'm really confused. =_=

Anyway, SM Entertainment has been releasing teasers for this group since mid-December. They've had two "prologue" songs, whatever that means. So this "debut" song is kinda not a debut. I hate this marketing strategy. Because I'm still really confused. =_= I hate feeling confused. So... EXO... you're gonna have to really work to win me over. We'll see how this sounds live.

My later comment:
The Chinese (Mandarin) version has the lyrics. The English is hilarious. Something definitely expected from this company. *facepalm*

f(x) - NU ABO M/V

April 5, 2012 at 7:19pm

I've had this song stuck in my head all day, so I decided to look up the music video when I got home. It's ok (what's the deal with the tasslepants?), but I can't help but love the song. Didn't like it too much at first, but it grew on me.
f(x) has had a few hits, but they would probably have gotten lost in the sea of girl groups if it weren't for tomboy Amber. She's like the opposite of Ren from NU'EST.(Tim posted a photo on my wall that shows that.) And since she's basically the only tomboyish girl in k-pop, she gets a lot of attention.

CNBLUE on Yoo Hee Yeol's Sketchbook

EDIT: SBS had the videos removed from YouTube, so I'm going to have to find them somewhere else. Sorry!

I couldn't pass up posting about this performance. CN Blue impressed me as soon as I heard them, but there is no comparison to how awesome I think they are now. If you're going to watch this, you have to watch all three songs to get what I mean.

First, they played "Hey You". It's a good song. Upbeat and catchy. And this is the best live I've heard of it so far. However, it's the only song on the mini-album that they had no hand in creating.

Then they kick it up a notch with a shortened version of their own song "One Time". It's immediately obvious by their performance that they feel differently about this song. It's a CNBlue that I haven't seen before.

But it doesn't stop there, oh no. I honestly don't know how to sum up my reaction to "In My Head" appropriately. The place was electrified. It's like they were saying: THIS is CN Blue.

I was glad to hear that they aren't going to have to perform someone else's songs on their next album. I like the ones that their company has given them to do and they do a great job with them, but there is a jump from really cool to freaking awesome when they play their own songs. I'm going to be looking up their Japanese albums for more pure CN Blue goodness.

CNBlue - Hey You M/V

Original Facebook post on March 30, 2012 at 8:49pm:

‎"Hey You" is upbeat, catchy, and actually pretty easy to sing along to, thanks to a bunch of English lyrics and international nonsense speak. They mispronounce a couple of English words, but I think I'll forgive them.

My First K-Pop Video: Wonder Girls - Tell Me

I think it was a few years back when someone had me watch Tell Me.  The song is nice, but what the dance was infectious. If I could dance, I would have tried to learn it. The complicated dance routines were a completely new idea to me. It took a long time for me to really dig in to k-pop, but I have the Wonder Girls to thank for getting me started.

Shinwha - Venus M/V

Original Facebook post on March 28, 2012 at 11:02pm:

After a 4 year hiatus, Shinhwa made an impressive comeback with "Venus" from their 10th album aptly titled "The Return". It's a great song and really neat video. Shinhwa is the longest running group without any lineup changes at 14 years. The break occurred because the members were fulfilling their mandatory military service requirement

Misheard Lyrics: SHINee - Sherlock

Listen for three hilarious phrases in Spanish:
Soy un Dorito (I'm a Dorito)
Tu galleta (Your cookie)
Pinata (... do I have to explain this one?)

Popular Music? No. Inkigayo.

When BIGBANG first posted performances from Inkigayo on their YouTube channel, the titles of the videos were "BIGBANG_0325_SBS Popular Music_BLUE". I don't understand why they chose to use an English name. You can't be a K-Pop fan for long before you're very familiar with Inkigayo and its Multizen award. Thanks to Inkigayo and other programs like M! Countdown, we're able to see lots of high-quality live performances. I'm sure this caused quite a bit of confusion, because all of the "Popular Music" videos are now properly labeled as "Inkigayo", as seen below.

Most Awesome K-Pop Music Monday Ever.

Simon and Martina did a freakin' fabulous job on this week's K-Pop Music Monday! I laughed so hard I actually cried. Watch below, but don't forget to visit their website: EatYourKimchi

SHINee - Sherlock M/V - Dance Only

When the M/V came out, I posted it on Facebook with some comments. (Seen below.) If I had known that they would come out with a real (not rehearsal) dance-only version, I would have posted that video. *Sigh* Oh well. Here it is, just in case you somehow missed it.

Introduction

This blog is a sister blog to my anime/manga journal. Mostly I maintain these blogs because I don't know many people who enjoy this wonderful stuff like I do. I wanted a place to "talk" about the things that interest me. I hope that other people find my comments interesting as well.

I will be transferring posts from Facebook about K-Pop so I have them all in the same place. I may add some notes to what I'd said about the video/performance/whatever when I shared it on FB.

Daesung - Wings (Live)

Original Facebook post on 3/25/12 at 11:03am:

Daesung's solo. There's a lot I could say about how this song is significant, but suffice it to say that he's been through hell recently and it marks a very happy turning point. It's great to see him singing and smiling again.

SHINee - Sherlock M/V

Original Facebook post on March 23 at 4:21am:

SHINee's new MV. The song doesn't really kick in until about 1:40 into the video, but then it totally has you hooked. The choreo is absolutely top-notch and the execution is perfect. The dance-only version is also a must-see. I would have changed a few things about the MV, though. More dance, less Jessica, less dog. New wardrobe/hair. Poor Taemin, subjected to extensions (again) and tasslepants.

Saturday, March 17, 2012

Nu'est - Face M/V

Original Facebook post on March 17 at 9:35am:

NU'EST, pronounced as "new east", is a brand new k-pop group. I really like this song. I appreciate that they didn't go for the usual sugary debut song. The MV has an anti-bullying theme, which is cool. Other observations: chair dances are awkward (doubly so for guys), the long-haired blonde one is shockingly feminine, fight-dancing is lame, but the video has some neat parts, too.

CNBLUE - Still in Love M/V

Original Facebook post on March 15 at 4:59pm:

CN Blue's new song, Still in Love, composed by the lead singer, Yonghwa. The best word I can think of to describe the sound is refreshing. The video is simple, just showing the band during the recording process.

2AM - I Wonder If You Hurt Like Me M/V

Original Facebook post on March 12 at 2:06am:

Beautiful song and cool video. The song itself starts at about 1:30. 2AM is a four-member ballad group. Their live performances are very impressive. At one point, 2AM and 2PM were one group called One Day. Occasionally, 2AM and 2PM will collaborate for live performances. They were all trainees together, so they're pretty close.

Sunny Hill - Midnight Circus M/V

Original Facebook post on February 25 at 1:17am:

Sunny Hill is definitely not the usual k-pop group. And this is not the usual k-pop video. There's an intro of sorts, so the song itself (which is awesome) doesn't start until about 1:25. I think the beginning is worth watching, though. WARNING: From about 3:45 to 3:50, there's a move that's a bit um... Janet Jackson-ish.

U-KISS - Tick Tack M/V

Original Facebook post on February 21 at 11:14pm:

U-Kiss has quickly become on of my favorite K-pop groups. Their live performances are almost perfect: never missing a note while performing very difficult choreography. Currently they're touring in Japan (with new songs in Japanese). I am LOVING their new songs. I'll share the other two M/Vs when they are posted on the official channel at the end of the month.

Note: The other two M/Vs haven't been posted on the official channel yet. There hasn't been an explanation as to why. There's only "short" versions on AVEX's chanel. I'm probably going to end up posting the unofficial uploads. (3/26/12)

BIGBANG - Blue M/V

Original Facebook post on February 21 at 9:49am:

YAY!!!! Awesome song :) I'm grinning from ear to ear at work. I think the guys think I'm crazy.

Note: Yes, I watched this on my phone when I was at work as soon as I could after its release about half an hour earlier.

Brown Eyed Girls - Sixth Sense M/V

Original Facebook post on February 14 at 6:22pm:

This is my favorite Brown Eyed Girls song, and boy can these women SING! Their live performances are just as good as the recording. The music video is very well-produced and has a message to it; It's not just pretty girls dancing and lip-synching. I'd give the MV a PG-13 rating, though. It's scandalous by Korean standards, but about the same as most American videos.

U-KISS - Somebody Take Me Away

Original Facebook post on February 10 at 1:16pm:

A very sweet and soothing duet sung by Kevin and Hoon of U-Kiss. Stress melting. I love Kevin's voice. He's the one who starts out the song and sings the English lines. It's too bad there's no music video.

Infinite - Before the Dawn M/V (Dance Version)

Original Facebook post on February 8 at 1:01am:

The chorus for this song is awesome. The choreography is great too. Unfortunately, you only see about half of it in this "dance version", but the actual music video irritates the crap out of me. I could also do without the red-haired rapper.

LED Apple - Time is Up M/V

Original Facebook post on February 6 at 3:23am:

Time's up-up-up (You~~~)♪ Yup. This one's stuck in my head now. They're a mishmash of idol/band/electronic/dance and yet it works. I was impressed that they had the English subtitles in the video, using the CC feature. Too bad the description was so badly translated. O_o

Chang Kiha and the Faces - 그렇고 그런 사이 M/V

Original Facebook post on February 5 at 6:42am:

This MV made me giggle! Very creative. Makes me think of OK GO's videos. It's from Chang Kiha & the Faces, a Korean indie band.

What's Up? Clip - It's Not Goodbye

Original Facebook post on February 3 at 8:13pm:

This song gives me goosebumps every single time. This is a clip from the Korean drama "What's Up?", so if you haven't been watching it, the visuals will make no sense. Watch it anyway. Srsly. Do it.

SE7EN - When I Can't Sing M/V

Original Facebook post on January 31 at 4:25pm:

SE7EN's new MV with a quick cameo by G-Dragon. Nice smooth sound. I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the album. (Just bought it off iTunes.) His interpretive dance at about 4 minutes is a bit out of place, though. And I wish JYP would stop whispering his name at the beginning of all the songs he's involved in. Really, it's kinda creepy.

B.A.P - Warrior M/V

Original Facebook post on January 27 at 11:41pm:

WOW. This is BAP's *first* live performance. Complicated and intense dance routine, impressive rapping by a 15 year-old, solid vocals with just a couple of mistakes, and they even pronounce "warrior" correctly. There's a music video for this song as well, but I think the live showcases their talent more. If BAP keeps this up, they'll be big. Really big.

**Live video I posted is no longer available. Here's the M/V instead:

U-KISS - Neverland M/V + Dance Version

Original Facebook post on January 25 at 8:52pm:

I am currently addicted to this song. If you like the mv, you should watch the dance version too. The best move is around 2:30, in my opinion. U-KISS was formed in 2008 and recently made their debut in Japan. Three of the seven members are fluent in English (two are American). They talked with Martina from eatyourkimchi.com for a long time backstage, in English, and they seemed really down-to-earth. I am definitely a fan!

Note: U-KISS now almost ties with BIGBANG for favorite male group. They are one of 3 groups whose physical albums I've bought, as well as digital. I'm currently waiting for A Shared Dream to arrive in the mail. (3/26/12)

Big Mama - Break Away M/V

Original Facebook post on January 16 at 11:50am:

Big Mama is not your usual Korean musical group. Their name is meant to show that they are not the usual Korean celebrity standard appearance and are confident with their powerful voices instead. This music video shows four beautiful women who are singing passionately on stage. However, it reveals that they are just lip-syncing and Big Mama is singing behind the curtains. Sorry for the crappy quality of the video - it's really hard to find. I'm disappointed in YG for neglecting them, but they persevered and are now signed with Tailruns media.

MBLAQ - This is War M/V

Original Facebook post on January 14 at 10:08pm:

MBLAQ was put together by Rain in '09. This video is their most recent song. It's an "I won't forgive you for stealing my woman" song. Apparently the laws of physics don't apply in this video, though. The live performances of the song that I've seen are quite good.

CL & Minzy - Please Don't Go (Live)

Original Facebook post on January 13 at 6:15pm:

CL and Minzy from 2NE1. This is the only CL/Minzy song, which I think is a shame. Honestly, I didn't like it all that much the first time I listened to it, but it really grew on me and it's one of my current favorites. The dance is catchy (and easy) too. My favorite part is the last chorus. I also love Minzy's leggings. If I was famous and skinny, I'd totally wear them.

Girl's Generation - Run Devil Run M/V

Original Facebook post on January 12 at 9:33pm:

Another mob, but this time there's only 9 of them. Girls' Generation, also known as SNSD, is definitely more about pretty faces/bodies than voice talent. They do NOT sound this good live. I still love the recorded version, though. They are definitely very popular. Two of the members are Americans.

Super Junior - Sorry Sorry M/V

Original Facebook post on January 10 at 5:03pm:

At 12 members, Super Junior is more of a mob than a group. They even have a token chubby guy. That said, they have some catchy songs and it is pretty remarkable how they manage to dance in sync so well. This song is older, but the video does a good job of showing each individual member.

Forgot to mention... The music starts at about 20 seconds in. I don't really get the introduction.

Note: I definitely don't see Shindong as a token chubby guy any more. He's actually my favorite SuJu member now. Yes, even more than Siwon and Leeteuk.

Daesung - Baby Don't Cry (Live)

Original Facebook post on January 9 at 1:07am:

And finally, Daesung, BIGBANG's smile. It's really too bad there's no MV for this one. He's got an amazing and unique voice. It would be awesome if he'd release a solo album. Daesung has done a lot of variety shows in the past and is absolutely hilarious. Currently, he's starring in the drama What's Up.

Taeyang - Wedding Dress M/V

Original Facebook post on January 9 at 12:52am:

Taeyang ties for best singer in BIGBANG, in my opinion. He's a great dancer and seems to prefer going shirtless. >///< He released an international album with a lot of English versions of his songs. Taeyang means "sun", thus the references.

Seungri - What Can I Do M/V

Original Facebook post on January 9 at 12:41am:

Seungri is the maknae (youngest) of BIGBANG. His name means "victory", so a V is his symbol. He's done a musical, and he is a singing/dancing coach on the side.

BIGBANG - Love Song M/V

Original Facebook post on January 8 at 10:01am:

BIGBANG is my favorite male group. They debuted in 2006 and are one of the most popular groups in Asia. Each of the members are successful in their own right, but as a group their talents really complement the others'. If you "hate this love song" *snicker*, then try watching one of their other videos. There's lots to love out there. ^_^

TVXQ - Mirotic M/V

Original Facebook post on January 6 at 6:19pm:

Addictive. It's really too bad that the group broke up. It's all because SM Entertainment treats their talent more like products than people. YG is so much better.

Beast - Fiction M/V

Original Facebook post on January 4 at 7:58pm:

This one's for C.A.. BEAST members are between 20 and 22. ;) They're no competition for Rain though. XD

2NE1 - Ugly & I'm the Best (Live)

Original Facebook post on January 4 at 5:24am:

Great performance about a week ago. I *really* wish they'd announce the release date for their US album!

Rain - Love Song M/V

Original Facebook post on January 3 at 6:51pm:

Slow start, great song. He did an English version, but his accent and the awkward lyrics get in the way. Looking forward to July 2013 when Rain gets back from military service.

Note: I didn't say anything about the incredibly sexy dance since my grandparents and other family are my friends on FB. But, WOW. O_O
